footprint

Carbon footprint

2011 is very close so it´s time to look back. My year 2010 was very busy, full of amazing experiences and lots of fun. Of course there was the little stomach disease in India wich lasted for almost 5 weeks. There was a small stupid car accident worth 1000 NZ$ in Te Niko and the the second loss against the spanish soccer team in the semi final of the world cup. I am still broke and in a little quarrel with India, but there is no regret about my decision to go to India and skip a termin at my University.

While travelling I often though about the Carbon footprint I calculated 2 years ago. In those days I used the bike or the public transport system. I lowered the heating, ate few meat and so on. There my carbon footprint was 2,6 global hectar. A great low value I was proud of. But now it´s 2010 and I travelled a lot.

I shuttled between Hamburg and Greifswald and Weimar. I went with a groupd of students to Rotterdam and Amsterdam by car. But then there was a couple of flights and car trips wich produced a lot of emission. Hamburg-Dubai-Kochi-Dubai-Hamburg-Dubai-Kochi-Singapore-Auckland-Kuala Lumpur-Colombo-Chennai-Mumbay-Goa-Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi-Kathmandu-Varanasi-Kajuraho-Moscow-Hamburg. 22 flights within 1 year!!! I spent almost 95 hours in the planes and travelled round about 64.000 kilometers, thats 1,5 times around our Earth. When i wasn´t travelling by plane, I used the train (almost 14.000 kilometers). Aditional there are 2500 kilometers by bus in Nepal, India and Sri Lanka wich is the worst way to travel.

The best was of course my card in New Zealand. 5700 kilometer on both Islands in 17 days, thats nice.

If you enter all these data to this carbon footprint calculator I got this terrible result.

Winterwonderland

An excerpt from our local newspaper “Hamburger Abendblatt”

Now we have snow and chilly temperatures for the last 3 weeks. I was sick, but I like it, I love it. When I was in India I complained about the heat and I missed the “cold” climate in Germany. I´ll never ever again complain about coldness 🙂

Adieu Paypal

Today I resigned my Paypal Account because of the way they treat Julian Assange. I don´t like the way he published some of the worlds secrets but I really dislike the way the americans try to blame him. Paypal, VisaCard and MasterCard stopped payment to Mr. Assange and so did paypal.

Technically I should resign my Amazon and Ebay accounts too, but not now. There will be a chance hereafter to finde a reason to cancel it 🙂

A goal is set

For the last 2 years a desire came to my mind to run a marathon. Its easy for me to walk 42 kilometers, but its quite harder to run the same distance. I practiced a lot and ran 2 times a week around the Alster, our tiny lake in the middle of the city. Its a 7,4 km circuit with the option to expand the run by 2 kilometers with the Inner Alster. I started to attend the Alsterlauf and the AirPortRace (17,1km) and finished successful. October 2010 I applied for the Marathon in Hamburg on 25th of April. But then there was the very strong winter with ice on every path and additionaly my knee injury, so I haden´t been able to practice and in the end I had to cancel.

This time I hope for a strong but short winter so I will be able to train regular. The Marathon 2011 is 22th of May so I have almost half a year for preparation. And this time there is no need to apply too early beacuse my bank sent me a startguarantee till the 31th of march.
Its a challenge, but it´s possible.

But first I have to recover and get well 🙂

Update (31th January)

Theres no way to practise. My left knee does not agree with my ambitions to run longer distances. I am sad, but lock forward to other challanges.

Lost briefcase

When I left the university this afternoon I walked to Dammtor to get my train back home.  On the platform there was the announcement that the train service is out of order because of smoke generation in the tunnel to Harburg. Nice one! Luckily I could easily evade this grievance and took the ICE for one station 🙂

At the mainrailwaystation I arrived late and of course I missed my train, so I had to wait half an hour. There I was walking in the cold, waiting for my train, listening to the usual announcements. But this time they repeated the message every 60 seconds and so I paid more attention “The owner of the black notebook bag is supposed to pick his bag from the bench on plattform No. 7”.  Only now I realized the crowd of guards standing next to me watching an abandoned bag on the bench.

This must happen thousend times a day and it is nothing but a harmless piece of luggage. But the possibility that this time it could be a bomb freightened me and I moved away a few steps and waited behind a massive metal wall. 12 calls and minutes later two policemen came and they opened the bag. And they found .. suprise suprise … a laptop!!!
